How free printing works in the UK.
Free printing is the lab writing off the 6x4. You still choose the file, accept the paper, and pay to move the packet — or you stand at a photostation and pay for speed.
The usual free printing path
- Install the UK app. FreePrints and Snapfish keep the real free printing credit inside the app, not on a desktop site.
- Spend the monthly allowance. Snapfish expires unused credit at month end. FreePrints caps you at 45 free 6x4s a month and 500 a year.
- Pay delivery or collect. That is the whole commercial trick of free printing UK. The print line is £0. The postage line is not.
When paid printing is the better “free”
If you want 300 prints this afternoon, Tesco or ASDA from 9p with free click and collect can beat an app that is free plus postage, because you are not feeding a monthly drip. Boots Photo is the quality-and-counter version of the same idea.
Bonusprint and leftover Photobox codes are paid printing with discounts. They are not free printing, even when a banner shouts 8p.
Quality still matters when the printing is free
Phone screens are backlit. Paper is not. Free printing still needs enough pixels for a 6x4 and a lab that does not crush shadows. App offers usually let you pick glossy or matt. High-street machines may add a white border on some express sizes — ASDA warns about that on some 7x5s.
